Do You Need More Cowbell?
The other day on my weekly morning run, I was struggling with my jog, er, run. Big time. I was feeling totally unmotivated to move any faster. Could I move faster? Well, yeah, but I didn’t feel like it.
So here I was on this beautiful morning, in a headspace of bad attitude and having an internal temper tantrum. If you would have seen me on the road, you’d have no idea about the interior wrestling match that was going on in my head
“I can’t believe how much you’ve slowed down.”
“Really?”
“COME. ON.”
Then I remembered what I’ve been telling my clients for more than 20 years. I needed to take action.
It doesn’t matter if you do or don’t feel like it. If you want to improve, get to the next level at whatever it is you are desiring or wanting in your life, then you gotta do the thing. I needed to pick up my feet and start turning over my legs. Even just a fraction quicker would be enough. Because here’s what I know about high performers-they practice their art, routines, the way they think and behave, more than the average person.
So that’s what I did. I picked up my pace just a bit. And you know what I thought of that helped me? Have you ever been to a running race or a triathlon (if you never have and want to be inspired to tears, go to the finish line of an ironman distance race-go and tell me you didn’t cry) and watch how the spectators are SCREAMING and CHEERING you on towards the finish line. People who don’t even know you . . .
“GO! GO! GO! YOU GOT THIS!”
Not surprisingly so, almost everyone who thinks they can’t move any faster, moves faster. I’m always amazed at how my watch shows I ran that last ¼ mile like I’d just jumped out of bed fresh as a daisy! This is solely because of the people around me pushing me, supporting me and encouraging me to keep moving forward.
This is what each of us has to do on the daily to get our stuff done. Shoot, sometimes it’s what we gotta do to just get out of bed. Do it not because of how you feel, do it because you told yourself you would. And get support. Tell family and friends your goals and ask them to check in on you and provide encouragement. Tell them to Ring That Cowbell for you.
Now it’s your turn. Answer these questions for yourself: What are your big goals? What are you doing to take action? Time to get going!
Mad love!
